Office politics are usually played for laughs on television, but New York playwright Adam Bock aims as much for mystery and anxiety as comedy in The Thugs ...CLICK HERE to read the whole review.Under Matt Slaybaugh's direction, eight actors master Bock's rhythmic dialogue while convincingly playing ninth-floor office workers whose fears are aroused by gossip about strange activities on other floors.

Michael Grossberg interviewed playwright Adam Bock and director Matt Slaybaugh for his preview coverage of The Thugs. Here's an excerpt:
Working at a temporary agency while in his mid-30s inspired an up-and-coming New York playwright to write The Thugs, which will launch the season of Available Light theater."You don't really know much (as a temp), because you're not connected," playwright Adam Bock, 45, said from New York.
"One time I went and had a look at one of these law firms that the agency would send people out to. I realized those buildings can become scary because you don't know who's around the corner, who's in the office next to you or where the elevators really go to. . . . It's an unsettling experience."

To further entice you, our other website, Theatreforte, has an exclusive interview with Thugs playwright Adam Bock, conducted by AVLT affiliate Sean Christopher Lewis just a couple of days ago. Here's a teaser:
"Politics" comes from "polus." Your city. What’s your world? That’s what politics are ... the world you want. Is yours a world where people are scared or a world where people are good? I mean in your world homeless people might be mentally ill while in another person’s world they’re willful. It’s really about how you want to build your city. I mean that’s what we’re trying to do. Write a bigger circle. More inclusion. I think I’m interested in it as a gay man I want the circle to be big enough for us. It’s so sad. I mean with the war - we can’t really see a circle that includes Iraq. If we did, if we cared, we wouldn’t be able to only see our dead. We’d keep a count of theirs. We know exactly how many Americans have died. Iraqis we estimate like 30-70 thousand. That’s our job as artists - for me, my job - how can we expand the circle. To read the whole fantastic interview, visit Theatreforte by clicking right here.
