HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes takes an in-depth look at representations of manhood, sexism and homophobia in hip-hop culture. This groundbreaking documentary is a “loving critique” of certain disturbing developments in rap music culture from the point of view of a fan who challenges the art form’s representations of masculinity.
The films airs February 20, on PBS. The website contains great information on the film, a trailer, some history of hip-hop, and notes on related issues.

Day Nine: Teena Marie

After two weeks of snow days, we're back!

Teena Marie did indeed bring her hip-hop dance stylings to AIMS today. She taught an incredible 10-minute hip-hop history, and shared the basics of b-boy/girl-ing, hip-hop social dances, posing, and more.

Day Ten

Today we began work on an introduction for the whole show. The group was smaller than usual, so we created a short series of poses and marching that involved everyone in the room. Next week we'll incorporate other people into this section, and add some words.

Day Eleven

Teena Marie returned today and began working on the choreography for the show. After showing some videos of b-boys and b-girls from around the world, she led the group in some popping, locking, and floorwork before staging a battle to highlight everything the group has learned.

Below is a fun video of some of the days work.
